Surgery Room Assistant

SURGERY EXAM ROOM ASSISTANT

INTRODUCTION

The surgery exam room assistant helps the technicians, doctors, and receptionists in all duties of the hospital. The responsibilities vary with current needs of the hospital staff, the season of the year, and the individual abilities demonstrated by the employee.

The Surgery Exam Room Assistant is the primary contact with our clients.  Excellent client service and communication skills are required.  The Surgery Exam Room Assistant is responsible for beginning the procedures for examination.  First, the animal is weighed and the weight recorded in the medical history, the temperature, pulse, respiration and MM is taken and recorded and medical history is taken and noted in the medical note.  It may be necessary to help restrain the pet during the examination and treatment.

MAJOR DUTIES

Public Relations: Professional, cheerful, and helpful attitude when contacting pet owners, knowledge of preventative health care and surgical procedure recommendations to answer questions and assist in marketing veterinary services from which their pet would benefit.

Hospital Physical Plant: General cleaning of public and employee areas, including pharmacy, exam rooms, hallways, GPS, ultrasound, dentistry, and lab. Goal is to help maintain clean, odor-free, and attractive environment. 

Animal: Ability to restrain for procedures performed by technicians or doctors, knowledge of common diseases, their symptoms and means of transmission, administration of oral medications, assessment of change in animal status.

Laboratory: Performance of simple in-house laboratory tests, completion of forms for out house laboratory, filing of laboratory reports and clean up of laboratory area.  Ability to request necessary lab work or medical records from the rDVM’s and know where the rDVM phone book is located.

Assisting:   Animal restraint, nail trimming, ear cleaning, client education, prescription filling and computer transaction entry during office hours or treatment times.

Inventory: Stocking of hospital supplies, filling out storeroom requisition, keeping pharmacy clean, checking for expiration dates and returning to inventory manager for possible credit from vendors.

OTHER DUTIES

  • Ensuring our required forms, lab work, medical records and x-rays are with the patient during the consult appointment.
  • Anticipate possible needs of the appointment/procedure and alerting the technicians.
  • To be present and available during exam times for the Surgeon.
  • Receiving the client and obtaining a TPR and weight with each patient.
  • After the client leaves the exam room, the table and room should be cleaned and the room made ready for the next client.
  • Be sure supplies are always available in exam rooms and treatment room.
  • See that necessary literature is always available for you or doctor to give to client.
  • Dispensing medication which the doctor has prescribed.
  • Taking drug inventory and keeping supplies for cleaning, animal food, paper towels, etc. current.
  • Preparing an animal for surgery.
  • Cleaning and packing surgical instruments.
  • Taking x-rays
  • Follow daily cleaning duties in Surgery.
  • Assisting with the dog walking, cage cleaning and general hospital cleaning as needed.
  • Keeping the treatment area clean and free of dirty items used during treatment.
  • Review surgery schedule and set up surgery rooms.
  • Get together all necessary instruments and equipment needed.
  • Make sure that surgery room and surgery prep area are well stocked.
  • Assist surgery technicians with surgical preparations and procedures.
  • Prepare for next surgery until all are completed.
  • Assist doctors or other staff, when needed.
  • Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave, and any other equipment used in surgery.
  • Maintain inventory on all suture or surgery supplies and place on want list, if needed.
  • Perform any other duties that are requested by the doctor or practice manager.

Minimum Qualifications:

Knowledge Of:   

  • Aseptic technique of cleaning and disinfecting methods and the use and care of cleaning materials and equipment; be able to follow infectious disease protocol.
  • Proper methods of animal handling and restraint.

Ability To:          

  • Use cleaning materials and equipment with skill and efficiency.
  • Perform moderately heavy physical labor.
  • Understand and carry out oral and written directions.
  • Maintain cooperative relationships with those contacted in the course of work.

Education:          

  •  Equivalent to completion of 12th grade
