Licensed Veterinary Technician
Position Overview
The Veterinary Technician supports hospital operations by providing dedicated quality veterinary care and exceptional service to our patients and clients. Responsibilities include providing patient care by determining animal requirements, conducting examinations and diagnostic procedures, assisting during surgery and operations, providing nursing care, assisting with feeding and caring for patients, maintaining medical supplies and equipment, overseeing triage and discharging patients, and maintaining patient medical records.
Essential Position Functions
Patient care:
- Taking vital signs (temperature, heart rate, respiration rate)
- Obtaining medical histories from clients
- Performing basic physical examinations
- Administering medications orally, topically, or via injection
- Wound care and bandage changes
- Monitoring animals under anesthesia
- Providing post-operative care
- Performing dental cleanings
Laboratory procedures:
- Collecting blood, urine, and fecal samples
- Performing basic laboratory tests (e.g., parasite checks, urinalysis)
- Preparing samples for submission to outside laboratories
Radiology:
- Taking radiographs (X-rays)
- Developing and interpreting radiographs under veterinary supervision
Surgical assistance:
- Preparing surgical instruments and supplies
- Assisting the veterinarian during surgery by retracting tissue, suctioning, and passing instruments
Client education:
- Explaining treatment plans and medication instructions to clients
- Providing post-operative care instructions
- Answering client questions about pet health
Required Qualifications
- Education: Graduation from an accredited veterinary technician program
- Certification: Passing a national veterinary technician licensing exam
- License: Maintaining a current veterinary technician license in the state of practice
