Equine Veterinary Technician

Job Title: Veterinary Technician

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hagyard Equine is seeking veterinary technicians with a strong interest in equine medicine! 

About the Practice:

With 146 years of valued service to the equine industry of Central Kentucky, Hagyard Equine Medical Institute is looking to grow its team of technicians. We have openings within Surgery and Medicine and are looking for candidates across multiple shifts, with a priority on those who are available for our afternoon or overnight shifts.

 

Essential Duties include the following, specific duties may change based on department and shift

  • Participates in daily rounds with incoming and outgoing shifts to review patient status and requirements.
  • Administers treatments ordered by the veterinarian and according to treatment sheets.
  • Prepares medications, fluids and supplies for patients.
  • Monitors patient behavior and status by taking temperature, pulse, respiration, and documenting other vital signs and observations.
  • Monitors, identifies problems and makes corrections as required with patient catheter sites, fluid lines, bandages, etc…
  • Notifies shift supervisor, and when appropriate, the veterinarian of any significant changes with the patient.
  • Collects medical history of patient and document in chart.
  • Maintains patient medical records and accurately records supplies, medications, lab work, and procedures.
  • Ensures hospital policies, protocols, work plans, and patient rights are followed at all times.
  • Assists with admission and discharge of patients.
  • Collects samples as directed, i.e. blood, etc.
  • Greets and communicates with clients as specified by the shift supervisor and/or veterinarian.

 

Education/Experience:

  • Prior work or experience with horses is required
  • Associate's degree (A. A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school or six months to one year related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Veterinary Technician License is not required, but a significant benefit

 

Schedule:

Schedule will depend upon candidate experience, availability, and priority needs of the team. Our shifts are generally the following (with some small variation):

  • Day Shift 7:30 am – 3:30 pm
  • Evening Shift 3:30 pm – 11:30 pm
  • Night Shift 11:30 pm – 7:30 am

Weekend availability is typically needed, but can depend upon specific opening. Specific details will be discussed during the interview process, so please apply if you are interested for the role!
