Licensed Veterinary Technician-Emergency Team Supervisor

Columbia River Veterinary Specialists of Vancouver, WA is seeking a full-time Licensed Veterinary Technician to serve as an Emergency Team Supervisor. Our ER Team Supervisors perform the duties of a licensed veterinary technician as well as provides leadership and mentorship of assigned patient care team members, including technicians and assistants.  This leadership role is an opportunity to advance your career and share your wealth of knowledge and experience, extending your passion for providing excellent patient care and having a positive impact on a dedicated team of professionals!

The ER Team Supervisor oversees the scheduling, mentorship and supervision of their assigned team, expediting the care and efficiency of the department.  Our ER Team Supervisor must lead by example, demonstrating organizational skills, following hospital policies and having a professional and mature approach to their work and responsibilities.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Supervise technicians and other medical personnel in assigned department, evaluating performance, reviewing time reporting, enforcing company policies and communicating new practices and policies regarding technical duties; participating in selection and discipline of staff.
  • Schedule staff according to departmental needs, monitoring and regulating overtime hours worked by staff, ensuring proper coverage in times of shortage.
  • Administer on-call schedule as well as standard schedule for staff.
  • Train new staff in their responsibilities; mentor all staff regarding performance and training needs.
  • Perform the duties of technician or assistant, as scheduled.
  • Liaison with other departments and supervisors regarding patient care and hospital operations; resolve issues, as needed.
  • Oversee cleaning, stocking, and inventory duties for the department.
  • Exhibit confidentiality and professionalism in all regards for employee issues; be proactive in approach to issue resolution.
  • Keep hospital management informed of any issues or risks that might impact operations or employee relations; work with management team to resolve.
  • Hospital policies and procedures, including contents of Employee Handbook and Union Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Clinical laboratory procedures.
  • Medication calculations and administration.
  • Venipuncture, Catheter placement, Animal restraint and Vital sign monitoring.
  • Client communications and education.
  • Radiographic technique and anesthesiology.
  • Patient physical assessments.
  • Veterinary environment, terminology, and protocols.
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT)
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Management.

Successful Candidates will possess the following skills and knowledge (or have the ability to learn):

  • Function as charge nurse in respective department/area.
  • Provide excellent documentation including client communications, treatments, anesthetic monitoring, and controlled drug logs (Cubex)
  • Ability to give clear and concise rounds with relevant patient information
  • Educate/mentor other staff members with your skills/knowledge whenever possible
  • Proficient in phlebotomy, cystocentesis, canine urinary catheter placement and NG tube placement.
  • Able to perform treatments/fluid therapy when given dose
  • Ability to perform CPR including chest compressions, intubation, and breath administration. Direct others during a code.
  • Ability to collect vital, pertinent information from distraught owners when patients are critical.
  • Ability to perform advanced laboratory skills including cell morphology review, urine dry prep slide review and fecal review.
  • Excellent/effective triage skills including being able to communicate with client status of patient and treatments we are implementing
  • Ability to perform phone triage confidently, kindly, and effectively with clients.
  • Start immediate stabilization on patients under doctor direction
  • Understand relevant CBC/CHEM values
  • Understand the use, common doses and contraindications of all medications administered
  • Blood transfusion therapy including collection, administration, and transfusion reactions
  • Albumin/Plasma transfusion therapy including administration and transfusion reactions
  • Identify obvious murmurs, arrythmias and pulse deficits
  • Excellent anesthetic skills with knowledge of common side effects and immediate actions necessary to combat them.
  • Ability to monitor and record sedation/anesthetic events with confidence
  • Know anesthetic medications, their normal range for dosing, side effects, and contraindications

Requirements(or Preferences):

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Licensed Veterinary Technician in Washington or ability to become Licensed in the State of Washington if licensed in another state
  • Excellent Written and Verbal Communication skills
  • Demonstrated Time Management, Prioritization and Organizational skills
  • Must display High Emotional IQ and Empathy under moments of extreme duress
  • Previous experience in a Supervisory or Leadership role is preferred with solid understanding of coaching and performance improvement skills.
  • The ability to lift, push and pull up to 40lbs
  • Ability to withstand long hours of standing, squatting, kneeling and walking
  • Availability for scheduled on-call work with some evenings and weekends
  • Basic computer skills
  • Adapt to an ever-changing work environment
  • Maintain objectivity during highly stressful/emotional situations
  • Keep a positive and professional demeanor during interactions with clients and team members, leading by example
